Sprinkler Water Shut Off Valve Leaking

Sprinkler valve leaks are generally due to one of two reasons.

Start by trying to gently tighten it up and see if that helps. Pack valve box with dry rags to absorb water. Remove the old washer and slide on the new one. A leaky valve typically arises due to a blockage in the mechanism that runs the valve.

Twist out the low voltage solenoid valve then wait for excess water to drain out. Each valve in your sprinkler is like a faucet which shuts off and turns on water flow. If not then take it apart and determine how it is supposed to seal. If the fixture never froze then either wear vibration or a dried seal is the culprit.

A blockage could also be an indication that the valve is worn out and requires replacement. Reinstall the packing nut tighten lightly with a wrench don t over tighten at this or any other point and reattach the handle. Unscrew the bonnet from the top of the valve using a phillips screwdriver. Next remove the handle from the stem and then loosen and remove the packing nut.

If the leaks happen directly after running the sprinkler system and do not occur all the time then this normal drainage is likely the cause. First shut off the water to the leaking water valve. Like any faucet in your home they can leak. Remove lid from valve box and clean out mud from inside of box with hand trowel. Shut off the water to the sprinkler system.
