In general the long dimension of a saddle hip slate should be approximately twice the exposure of the field slates. A saddle hip is when the cap slate is installed over the finished slate roof on either side creating a saddle effect. There are many ways to construct copper ridge and hip flashings. Most hip installations involve the weaving of copper flashing sheets between roofing shingles.

The ridge flashings form a cover over the roofing material. The size of the slates depends on the field slate size. Install the slates in pairs not one side at a time. Continue up the hip in this manner flashing over the top of each pair of hip slates.

The outside edge of the tile will be covered by a rake tile on a gable end or a hip and ridge tile on a hip so precise cutting is not necessary.
